Positions
1. CHAIR
a. Shall be a year long position.
b. To facilitate at all meetings of this chapter, and to see that all Mesa Directiva officers perform their respective duties.
c. To submit recommendation for appointment and removals of all committee chairpersons to the Mesa Directiva.
d. When an officer position is vacant the Chair will appoint someone who will be approved by the membership: or the membership can call for a special election.
e. To vote on all matters before the chapter that end in a tie vote.
f. To make an oral end of semester report of chapters activities to the membership.
g. To represent the chapter whenever appropriate. Only the Chair can speak on behalf of the chapter unless a member is appointed by the chair and approved by the body. In case of an emergency, the Mesa Directiva can appoint a speaker.
h. To present an updated manual to the membership or succeeding Chair at the end of the term.
i. And all other duties as deemed appropriate by the membership.
2. CO-VICE CHAIRS
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. There will be two M.E.Ch.A. Co-Vice Chairpersons to ease the burden of current standing committees. The workload will be divided evenly between the two Vice Chairpersons.
c. To preside at all meetings when the chair is unable to do so.
d. To be an ex-officio member of all committees.
e. To help the Chair carry out the function of the office when needed.
f. To co-chair the High School Conference and Raza Graduation.
g. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
h. And all other duties as deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
3. SECRETARY
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. To prepare agendas and keep the minutes of all meetings and present them at each subsequent meeting.
c. To assist the Chair in receiving and issuing correspondence regarding the activities of the chapter, including sending weekly informational emails to the chapter.
d. To take attendance at all meetings.
e. The Secretary in conjunction with the Parliamentarian shall prepare documentation of all eligible voters for elections.
f. Keep the office orderly and stocked of office supplies.
g. To keep and update calendar of events in the office and the bulletin boards.
h. To keep the office bulletin boards updated with current flyers and events.
i. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
j. And all other duties as deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
4. TREASURER
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. To be custodian of all funds.
c. To keep accurate records and to prepare a report to be present at each general meeting.
d. To have records available for review by the Chair of the Chapter.
e. To coordinate and assist in all fundraising events and activities in regards to financial advice.
f. To prepare the budget report.
g. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
h. And all other duties as deemed appropriate by the membership and Chair.
5. PARLIAMENTARIAN
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. Advise the Chair on all constitutional procedures.
c. Preside at all meetings when the Chair and Co-Vice Chairs are not present or must leave, or where the topic being considered would put the Chair and Co-Vice Chairs in conflict of interest.
d. Shall investigate all charges brought against officers or members and bring impeachment proceeding and will have access to M.E.Ch.A. files when carrying out their duties.
e. Will investigate and submit to the membership for approval or disapproval of names and individual or groups considered harmful to M.E.Ch.A. and therefore not eligible for membership without the permission from the body as a whole.
f. Will help in the administration of M.E.Ch.A. by working with the Co-Vice Chairs in the coordination of committees and other activities.
g. Will assist the Chair at the meetings by keeping order and making sure motions are carried out properly.
h. Shall be responsible of supervising Mesa Directiva elections and A.S. endorsements with assistance of a M.E.Ch.A. member at large.
i. Must provide at least one educational segment on Robert's Rules.
j. Shall not be able to vote within Mesa or general body meetings, unless under special circumstances.
k. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
l. And all other duties as deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
6. EXTERNAL REPRESENTATIVE
a. Shall be a year long position.
b. To attend all San Diego M.E.Ch.A. Central, Alta Califas Sur M.E.C.h.A. Regional (A.C.S.M.R), statewide and liaison meetings (whenever National M.E.Ch.A. budget allows), M.E.Ch.A. statewide and national conferences, and to represent the chapter at every M.E.Ch.A. statewide and national conference.
c. To keep the officers and membership informed about M.E.Ch.A. Central and A.C.S.M.R. plans and activities.
d. Keep updated contacts with other M.E.Ch.A.s.
e. Coordinate transportation to Central and A.C.S.M.R. meetings, statewide and national liaisons, and national and statewide M.E.Ch.A. conferences.
f. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the term.
g. And all other duties as deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
7. OURSTORIAN
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. To keep an ourstory album with pictures, articles, etc. of interest to the organization.
c. To have the album completed for the membership by the end of each semester.
d. To update M.E.Ch.A.'s social media, including but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
e. To update M.E.Ch.A.'s website.
f. To assist in the coordination of special events (e.g. El Grito, the High School Conference, Latinx Heritage Month, and Raza Graduation).
g. To be in charge of publicity as a direct liaison between M.E.Ch.A. and the community.
h. Shall ensure that M.E.Ch.A.'s newsletter, ¡Venceremos!, be produced mid-semester and at the end of the semester.
i. Shall create slideshows to review events such as the High School Conference, the general body retreat, Zapata March, and an end of the year overview.
j. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
k. And all other duties deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
8. ON-CAMPUS REPRESENTATIVE
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. To attend all Chicana and Chicano Studies (CCS) faculty and departmental meetings and organize on-campus events with the CCS Department (e.g. guest speakers, M.E.Ch.A. events, etc.)
c. To keep officers and members informed about Chicana and Chicano Studies and M.E.Ch.A. annual events, and vice versa.
d. Shall be responsible for getting sponsorship of members through the CCS Department for M.E.Ch.A. national and statewide conferences, the N.A.C.C.S. Conference.
e. Shall organize, coordinate, and obtain endorsements for events with other on-campus Raza groups including, but not limited to A.Ch.A., HBSA, etc.
f. Shall work with the Chicanx Community Organizer in order to get more non-M.E.Ch.A. organizations involved in grassroots community-based organizing.
g. Shall oversee the Political Organizing Committee alongside the Chicanx Community Organizer.
h. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
And all other duties as deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
9. CHICANX COMMUNITY ORGANIZER
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. Shall attend San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium (SDIRC) meetings, along with at least one other community organization, (including, but not limited to, the Chicano Park Steering Committee, Colectivo Zapatista, and Youth Organizing Communities) deemed appropriate by the body.
c. Shall be responsible for involving MEChistas in grassroots community-based campaigns and events with both organizations (i.e. Chicano Park Day, Police/Migra Brutality protests, electoral campaigns, etc.)
d. Shall coordinate M.E.Ch.A. advising services within surrounding communities (e.g., Sherman Heights Community Center, juvenile detention centers, etc.).
e. Shall work with the On-Campus Representative in order to get more non-M.E.Ch.A. organizations involved in grassroots community-based organizing.
f. Shall oversee the Political Organizing Committee alongside the On-Campus Representative.
g. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
h. And all other duties deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
10. CHICANX YOUTH ORGANIZER
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. Shall be two positions, preferably of different gender identities
c. To help create and maintain strong M.E.Ch.A. chapters.
d. To coordinate campus tours conducted by M.E.Ch.A..
e. Shall be in charge of coordinating elementary, junior high, and high school presentations including, but not limited to, the Student University Network (S.U.N.) program.
f. Shall oversee the outreach committee for the High School Conference.
g. To promote Ethnic Studies and assist in its implementation in high schools.
h. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
i. And all other duties deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
11. GENDER AND SEXUALITY COORDINATOR
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. To raise awareness and create dialogue about gender and sexuality issues by coordinating two events per semester.(i.e. Political Education's, Noche de Conciencias relating to Muxeres, and the LGBTQ+ Community).To coordinate Círculo de Muxeres, Hombres Nobles, Non-Binary Círculo and one Joint Círculo per semester.
c. To raise awareness and create dialogue within our youth about gender and sexuality issues by ensuring workshops relating to these issues are offered during our annual High School Conference.
d. To ensure that M.E.Ch.A. de SDSU is a safer space for people of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
e. To keep open communication between M.E.Ch.A, the Pride Center, and the Women's Resource Center to ensure that MEChistas are aware of these resources.
f. To keep open communication with the Regional Gender Identity & Sexuality Coordinator
g. To keep M.E.Ch.A. informed about events, conferences, and programs (at SDSU, the state, and the nation) relating to both gender issues and sexuality issues.
h. This position shall be held by a self-identified muxer, LGBTQ+ individual, or ally to these communities, to ensure the integrity of a safe space.
i. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
j.And all other duties deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
12. ALUMNI COORDINATOR
a. Shall be a year long position.
b. Shall stay in communication with M.E.Ch.A. alumni through social media and email.
c. Shall maintain and update an alumni database.
d. Shall organize an event with alumni at least once a semester (e.g. dinner, mixer, etc.).
e. To organize an advising program with alumni.
f. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the term.
g. And all other duties deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
13. ACADEMIC COORDINATOR
a. Shall be a semester long position.
b. Shall oversee that the members of the Mesa Directiva are fulfilling their academic responsibilities by monitoring the grade of all Mesa members.
c. Shall organize the Hermanx/Hermanitx program alongside the CYO's.
d. Shall organize the Mesa Directiva's office hours.
e. To provide resources such as, but not limited to, financial aid resources, internship opportunities, and time management workshops with the help from the Chicanx Community Organizer, On-Campus Representative, and Alumni Coordinator.
f. Shall host at least two study nights per semester and one time-management and/or study skills workshop.
g. To present an updated manual to the membership or Chair at the end of the semester.
h. And all other duties deemed appropriate by the membership or Chair.
